2004 Summer League Report |
By Ross McKerracher
The first season of the Sydney
University Ultimate Frisbee League (SUUFL) has been
run and won. This new league was started to help spread the word
about Ultimate in
Sydney's inner-west areas and to help send the Sydney Uni team to
Australian Uni
games in Perth in September. 69 people, from National Champions and
Australian team
members to raw beginners participating in the inaugural season of
this league. Plenty
of hard-work by virgin league commissioner Anson Chun saw that this
league was a
fantastic success and was enjoyed by all. His targeted advertising
campaign outside
Central Station, Broadway shopping centre and other locations
resulted in over 25% of
league participants being brand-new to the sport of Ultimate.
Learn to play classes were held in
the weeks leading up to the league, and ensured
that the new players were well versed in the spirit of the game and
had basic skills
such as the backhand, forehand and pivoting under their belts
before the first night of
the league. Thanks to Mel Gangemi, Anson Chun, Jimmy Tod-Hill, Alex
Wong, Mario
Perez and Robin Johnston for leading these evenings.
The spirit prize was closely fought
by all the teams, but in the end Burning Sets Fire
were the eventual winners over O Brothers Where Art Thou. An
undermanned Uno beat
Happy Trees in a rather one-sided final to be the first winners of
SUUFL, while the Misfit
Warriors took out third place, beating UTS.
Final placings for the season were as
follows:
(1) Uno
(2) Happy Trees
(3) Misfit Warriors
(4) UTS
(5) Burning Sets Fire
(6) O Brothers Where Art Thou
